On April 24, 2014, Houston Aviation Director Mario Diaz presented members of Houston’s City Council with a dramatic new vision of the Mickey Leland International Terminal building (Terminal D) at George Bush Intercontinental Airport.  The plan calls for the construction of a completely new gateway terminal facility, on the same site as the existing Terminal D building.

Terminal D serves as the primary global gateway facility for air travelers in the Houston region but unfortunately, it does not adequately reflect Houston’s current standing as a world leader in business and quality of life offered to its residents.  It is with this reality in mind, that leaders with the Houston Airport System are moving forward with a dramatic and detailed plan to completely overhaul the Terminal D building at IAH.  The existing structure will remain operational throughout the renovation project, but the end result will be a thorough list of aesthetic and operational changes that impact virtually every corner of the terminal building.

Outreach:

In an effort to maximize community participation and pre-planning efficiency, HAS team members held a “Terminal D Industry Day” on March 13, 2014.  At this meeting, various representatives from the construction industry were given a detailed briefing on the plans to move forward with the Terminal D project.  Information passed along at this meeting included:

• Overview of Terminal B North project (explanation that this is a United Airlines project)
• General phasing plans for project
• Explanation of key design aspects (emphasis on lighting, “sense of place,” etc.)
• Discussion of funding/management mechanisms
• Timeline for program launch and completion
